Abigail turns one

It’s been said that time flies when you’re having fun, and based on that assumption alone, I must have been having the time of my life this past year. Our first grandchild Abigail turned one year old on March 15th and I barely recall most of it. Thank heavens for pictures and video.

I was pretty sure that most people would happily watch a two hour video of Abby but Mary said two minutes might be better so we shortened it (I think she’s crazy, who wouldn’t want to watch my Abby for two hours). Enjoy!

Magic Valley Symphony Concert

Several years ago I was asked if I would help the Magic Valley Symphony with images from their concert series as well as the marketing design necessary to get the word out to the masses that, yes, a concert is coming. As with many, I was in band in high school so I understand a lot of what happens behind the scenes and possibly feel some of the underlying tensions included with a performance. But mostly it helps me to anticipate ‘what will happen next’ an invaluable skill for a photographer. The best part? It’s like having your own live, visual, Pandora channel while you work. My channel even comes with a conductor.

Oregon Coast – Heceta Beach

From time to time Mary and I have the opportunity to travel and surprisingly I usually make a better tourist than photographer. Normally I’m so excited about getting away that if I don’t put ‘pack the camera’ on the to do list, I’ll forget to even take one. Consequently, once we’ve arrived I frequently need reminded to get the camera out and use it. I share all of this with you because I left my comfort zone and decided to create some pleasing images while on the beach. We spent the night at the Driftwood Inn on Heceta Beach in Florence, Oregon. The beach itself is frequently littered with driftwood large and small and is easily as enjoyable sunny or grey, it just elicits a different mood. I hope you enjoy. I know I did. As you’ll note below, luckily I remembered to pack the camera.

Question “My family will be together again this summer and I wanted to know if you would come to Boise and create family portraits for us?”

In a word, YES! We frequently travel to all sorts of destinations to create images and are happy to do so(you already know this if you’ve called our studio; it seems like we’re always gone). People tend to think that we only photograph at the studio and while it’s true that we do work there, it’s also true that we started out without a formal studio. The trial by fire method of learning taught us how to properly light to demonstrate depth and character and to include emotion. And probably a little known fact about me as a photographer; I’m easily bored with a scene. I know that I frequently drive Mary crazy because I’m always wanting a new background or canvas as I’ve grown tired of looking at the ones we currently have.
Of course the best part of location photography is the experience you provide for your family. We hear it all the time. The children’s comments, or the grand children’s comments about how much fun they had ‘that one day when everyone was together.’

An honor bestowed

I believe that occasionally we are presented with opportunities to make things go full circle and this month was one of those opportunities for me.
Almost exactly ten years ago a local photographer invited me to join our state association of professional photographers. I can still remember how awestruck I felt while simultaneously developing a sudden and acute inferiority complex. Rubbing shoulders with the best in Idaho was in no small measure inspiring and it was gratifying to learn that each of them experienced trials and tribulations in their professional endeavors, but mostly that they always endeavored to be professional. In short I’ve learned a ton. More from some than others but valuable all.
This week I was elected president of PP of Idaho and couldn’t be more honored. This a group of competitors and friends who strive to be better at their craft. People who are constantly sharing and teaching others just starting out. But as the circle completes, I recognize that it’s my to turn to teach. To share. To encourage. Guess what? I can’t wait!
